Prices for materials used in the door and window industry rose in December, according to the final Producer Price Index (PPI) data for 2017 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category increased 0.4 percent in December from the previous month, and it’s up 1.3 percent from December 2016. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification jumped 1.6 percent, and those prices have increased 4.9 percent since December 2016. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

Prices for fabricated structural metal products were unchanged in December, but that index, in the commodity grouping, is up 2.7 percent for the year. Ornamental and architectural metal product manufacturing, in the industry category, saw price increases of 0.4 percent for the month and 2.8 percent since 2016.

The PPI for metal windows was flat from its December level, and is 3.4 percent above 2016’s levels. Metal doors and frames increased 0.9 percent for the month and are up 4.5 percent for the year.

Prices for wood window units were unchanged from November and are up 1.3 percent since November 2016. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications fell 0.4 percent during the past month. They’re up 2 percent since last year.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials fell 0.2 percent from November and is up 0.5 percent from last year.

Prices for thermosetting resins and plastic materials rose 0.2 percent from November, and are up 1.8 percent since 2016. Fiberglass plastic product prices rose 1.1 percent since last month and are up 1.3 percent for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, increased 0.2 percent in November. Those prices are 1.1-percent higher than in 2016.
